Youth Education
At Christ the Servant, we often like to remind ourselves that “CTS” is not just an abbreviation
for the name of our congregation, but is also a an abbreviation for our motto, “Care, Teach, Serve.” The
education ministry focuses primarily (but not exclusively) on the second of these three points. To this end, we provide
Christian educational opportunities to both the children and the adult members of our congregation and community.
Youth
Education at Christ the Servant happens in many and various ways. It happens on Sundays and on other days of the week.
It happens within our church facility, in our homes, and in our community.
Our formal education program currently breaks
down into four age groups: kindergarten-3rd grade, 4th-6th grade, 7th-8th grade, and high school. Our primary programs
are Sunday School, koinonia, and youth groups.
Sunday school occurs each Sunday during our regular season from 9:50-10:50AM
between our two worship services. The K-3 class is currently in the third year of a four-year cycle exploring bible
stories through crafts, games, drama, and music. They begin each week with group prayer focused on the needs, desires,
and thanksgiving of the children, their family and friends, and the world at large. The 4-6 class is currently
in the second year of a three year cycle preparing them for confirmation class through study of the Old Testament, the New
Testament, and church history. The 7-8 and high school classes meet together each week to discuss a myriad of topics
designed to equip them with the tools they need to explore their faith and what it means to be Christian, now and throughout
their lives.
Koinonia is an opportunity for the kids to get together in Christian fellowship in a less structured environment.
We strive to provide approximately one opportunity each month for both the K-3 and for the 4-6 grade age groups to have an
activity—with some of these held together. This year, our activities include participation by all (K-6) in the
Hospice Duck Derby at Seneca Creek park, a guided tour of the National Cathedral (4-6), a game day (K-3), advent afternoon
crafts (K-6), remembering our baptism at the Germantown pool (K-6), packing lunches for the homeless (K-6), sharing the Seder
(4-6), and a tour of renaissance art at the National Gallery (4-6).
Youth group serve a similar (and expanded) function
for the 7-8 and high school aged youth that koinonia provides for the K-6 grade children. These activities, however,
fall under the category of Youth and Family Ministry rather than Youth Education. Please visit their webpage (link on
the bar to the left) to learn more.
