Adult Education
At Christ the Servant, we often like to remind ourselves
that “CTS” is not just an abbreviation for the name of our congregation, but is also a an abbreviation for our
motto, “Care, Teach, Serve.” The education ministry focuses primarily (but not exclusively) on the second
of these three points. To this end, we provide Christian educational opportunities to both the children and the adult
members of our congregation and community.
Adult Education at Christ the Servant happens in many and various ways.
It happens on Sundays and on other days of the week. It happens both in teacher lead classes and in group discussion.
It is lead by our paid clergy (Pastor Bastien), by other clergy who are part of community, and by our lay members. Our regularly
schedule adult education program consists of Adult Forum, Book Club, Film Buffs, Seminar, and retreats.
Adult forum
occurs each Sunday during our regular season from 9:50-10:50AM between our two worship services. Except during the Sundays
of Advent, Lent, and confirmation retreat weekends, Pastor Bastien leads this class in the study of the lives and works of
key persons in church and biblical history. The book of Joshua is the current topic. Next, the class will focus
on the lives of the important Christians honored in the Lutheran commemoration of the Saints followed by a close reading of
the Gospel of St. John. For those weeks when Pastor Bastien is away, adult forum provides a (well) forum for discussions
on a far reaching range of topics, from the environment, to the life and health of our community, to service projects in which
our members have been involved, to spirituality techniques, and much more.
Book Club and Film Buffs are two very similar
discussion groups that occur one Sunday evening each month. As the name suggests, Book Club reads a different book each
month and discusses it from a Christian perspective. These books cover a wide variety of genres including poetry, theology,
plays, scientific topics, and novels. Similarly, Film Buff watches a different movie each month and discusses it from
a Christian perspective. Because the members of the group select the movies, and as everyone has a unique perspective
on what makes a good movie, the selection of movies is very diverse.
