What is Spiritual Formation?

Spiritual Formation is the discipline concerned with an individual’s spiritual life. Spiritual formation helps quench the deep yearning human beings have for God. In the Christian tradition, spiritual formation takes seriously the work of the Holy Spirit in a person’s private and public life, assisting a person in her or his quest for intimacy with God. Spiritual formation invites a deeper understanding and relationship with one’s soul and the knowledge that human beings are created to be spiritual creatures. In spiritual formation, one learns to tell her or his sacred story in relation to the Divine. Eventually, a person committed to spiritual formation will come to realize that there is no distinction between one’s spiritual life and the “rest” of life: all stories and all life are sacred and spiritual in nature.
